With technology playing a role in every facet of life, protecting sensitive electronics from electromagnetic interference (EMI) is critical—particularly in sectors such as medical devices and aerospace, where precision and reliability are paramount. The challenge lies in ensuring effective EMI protection without compromising the functionality or design of the devices. This brings us to the importance of understanding magnetic permeability and the role of ferromagnetic metals in EMI shielding. Let’s explore ferromagnetism, the characteristics of ferromagnetic metals, their applications in EMI shielding, and how Eagle Magnetic’s expertise can help you become a leader in your industry.

What is Ferromagnetism?

Ferromagnetism is a phenomenon where certain materials, notably iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys, can exhibit strong magnetic properties. Specifically, these materials can become magnetized in an external magnetic field and retain their magnetism once the external field is removed. The underlying reason is the alignment of magnetic dipoles within the material.

At an atomic level, ferromagnetism is primarily due to the electron spin phenomenon. Electrons have a property called spin, which gives them a magnetic moment, meaning they behave like tiny magnets.

In ferromagnetic materials, most of these magnetic moments align in the same direction due to the exchange interaction—a quantum mechanical effect causing spins to align parallel to each other in regions called domains. This alignment results in a strong cumulative magnetic field.

The temperature at which a ferromagnetic material can no longer maintain its ferromagnetic property is known as the Curie temperature. Above this temperature, the intense random thermal agitation overcomes the alignment tendency of magnetic moments, causing the material to lose its magnetic properties and behave as a paramagnetic material.

Vice President Ron Jaggers says, “Our annealing cycle anneals above the Curie temperature just for this reason. The cooling cycle we use allows the structure of the molecules to align in such a way as to increase the permeability.”

What Are Ferromagnetic Metals?

Ferromagnetic metals are specific types of metals that exhibit strong magnetic properties. Common ferromagnetic metals include:

  1. Iron (Fe): Highly magnetic and widely used due to its availability and magnetic properties.
  1. Nickel (Ni): Less magnetic than iron but still significant for industrial applications.
  1. Cobalt (Co): Known for high-temperature stability, retaining its magnetic properties at higher temperatures than iron or nickel.

These metals can be found in pure forms or as part of various alloys. The presence of non-magnetic elements in an alloy can affect the magnetic permeability and the Curie temperature, which are critical for their application in magnetic shielding.

One of the key properties of these metals is their high magnetic permeability, a measure of the ability of the material to support magnetic field development within itself. This property is essential for the absorption and redirection of electromagnetic interference, which is pivotal in EMI shielding.

Importance of Ferromagnetic Metals in EMI Shielding

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a disturbance that affects an electrical circuit due to electromagnetic radiation emitted from an external source. This phenomenon can result in data loss, signal alteration, or even complete system failure, which can be disastrous in critical applications like medical life-support systems or avionics.

Ferromagnetic metals are crucial in the construction of EMI shielding because of their ability to attract and trap magnetic flux (lines of magnetic field). When an electronic device is encased within a ferromagnetic shield, any external electromagnetic waves are absorbed by the shield and re-routed around the device, thereby protecting the sensitive electronic components from interference.

The effectiveness of ferromagnetic metals in shielding against EMI is further enhanced by their high magnetic permeability, which allows these shields to attract more magnetic lines of force and conduct them efficiently. This property ensures minimal exposure of the protected device to the electromagnetic fields, as the lines of force are drawn into the shield rather than penetrating the electronic device.

Moreover, the thickness and composition of the ferromagnetic shield also play a critical role in its effectiveness. Generally, a thicker shield will provide better protection against higher frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, but this might not always be practical due to weight and space considerations in design.

Therefore, selecting the right type of ferromagnetic metal, possibly in combination with other materials, and engineering the correct shield thickness are crucial factors that require expert knowledge and precise manufacturing techniques.

By leveraging the unique properties of ferromagnetic metals and expertly incorporating them into device designs, manufacturers can protect against EMI, enhancing the reliability and performance of critical technology systems. Eagle Magnetic stands ready to guide these manufacturers in choosing the right materials and designs to meet their specific needs, so both protection and functionality are optimized.

Common Ferromagnetic Metals Used in Magnetic Shielding

Steel

Steel, a cornerstone in the realm of ferromagnetic materials, offers a harmonious blend of durability and functionality. Stainless steel is celebrated for its strength and resistance to corrosion. However, at Eagle, we typically use carbon steel and either plate it or powder coat it to increase its resistance to corrosion.

The alloy’s resilience brings reliable performance of electronic devices even in the harshest of settings, such as marine or high-salinity conditions, where corrosion is a significant concern.

The cost-effectiveness of steel further enhances its appeal. Given its widespread availability and affordability, steel is often the first choice for shielding applications ranging from everyday consumer electronics to critical medical devices and vital aerospace components.

This balance between performance and cost positions steel as an indispensable ally in the quest for effective EMI protection.

Iron

Iron’s role in magnetic shielding is underscored by its excellent magnetic permeability. This intrinsic characteristic allows iron to excel in absorbing and redirecting magnetic fields, making it a fundamental element in designs requiring superior EMI mitigation.

Its use is particularly prevalent in scenarios where the primary objective is the maximization of shielding effectiveness, even in the absence of stringent demands for environmental resistance.

However, iron’s susceptibility to corrosion means it requires additional considerations in its application. Protective coatings or the inclusion of iron within composite materials are common strategies employed to harness its magnetic properties while mitigating rust and degradation.

Such measures ensure iron’s continued relevance in shielding technologies, offering a cost-effective solution for a broad spectrum of applications.

Nickel

Nickel is also a distinguished ferromagnetic material, especially in its alloyed forms. Nickel’s magnetic permeability is not only exceptional but also uniquely suited for defending against high-frequency electromagnetic interference—a critical capability in today’s increasingly digital and wireless world.

Nickel-iron alloys stand out for their unmatched shielding prowess. This alloy has been engineered to provide optimal EMI protection.

This specialization makes these alloys sought-after material in industries where precision and reliability are critical, including the medical field and aerospace sector.

The properties of nickel alloys showcase the versatility and adaptability of ferromagnetic metals in confronting electromagnetic challenges.

Cobalt

Cobalt is known for its impressive magnetic permeability coupled with a Curie temperature of over 1000°C. This dual capability renders cobalt-based alloys as valuable assets in extreme conditions, where performance and durability are pushed to their limits. The aerospace and military sectors, in particular, benefit from cobalt’s resilience, leveraging it in devices that must withstand not only EMI but also varying temperatures and demanding operational environments.

While cobalt is a less conventional choice compared to its ferromagnetic counterparts, its unique characteristics justify its application in high-stakes scenarios. The metal’s ability to maintain magnetic properties across a wider temperature range ensures reliable device performance in situations where other materials might falter.

As technological advancements continue to drive the boundaries of device operation and environmental exposure, cobalt’s role in EMI shielding is poised to grow, securing its position as a crucial material in the advancement of electromagnetic protection strategies.
